Wanted: More Female Gamers!!!

November 17, 2007 | In Defcon | Comments Off

With the oncoming of the Nintendo Wii and various titles for the Nintendo DS, female gamers are beginning to come out of the woodwork and show of their true gaming skills. But back in the days of the PlayStation 1 the effort put in to attracting female gamers was minimal at best. Titles such as Resident Evil, Tomb Raider and Fifa made sure that the PlayStation was looked upon as something for the mainly male demographic. However there was some exceptions, later on in its life the PlayStation saw some more female orientated releases along with some big licenses attached to it. Games such as Little Mermaid 2, Lilo and Stitch, Barbie Explorer, Mary Kings all came out to fulfil a gap in the market for younger girls. But do you know what the turning factor was in getting girls into games?

Well it wasn’t this……

…yes thats right the Barbie Controller, but not only a controller, no what extra bit of kit did they add in to attract girls into games? A doll sized PlayStation 1 and controllers so little Barbie could play along as well. Now I hope you can see why girls were never really into games when the PlayStation came out, if this was what people thought they would want.

Well thats another day in the bag, a so concludes our first week of updates. Tune in tomorrow for more of the same….and the next day…and the next day. And so on until i get through all these things.

Cheers
